A Letter to Our Readers

The Open Library on Green Economy exists because a large and important body of knowledge is not reaching the people who need it.

Research, policy documents, institutional reports, and practical experience continue to accumulate across governments, universities, international organisations, and businesses. Yet much of this material remains difficult to navigate. It is often dispersed, technical, or addressed to narrow audiences. As a result, those who are trying to learn, decide, or act frequently encounter either information overload or an absence of reliable reference points.

The Open Library on Green Economy, or OLGE, was created in response to this condition.

Why this library exists

OLGE was founded on a simple observation. Knowledge that is meant to serve the public good often does not reach the public in a usable form. Climate research is frequently locked inside academic journals. Policy documents are written for narrow audiences. Corporate sustainability knowledge is scattered across reports that are difficult to interpret. Citizens, students, small organisations, and even practitioners struggle to find credible, neutral, and contextual information in one place.

This gap between knowledge and understanding weakens public discourse, limits policy uptake, and slows collective action. OLGE exists to narrow that gap by making sustainability and green economy knowledge open, accessible, and actionable.

What OLGE is, and what it is not

OLGE is an open, nonprofit knowledge platform focused on sustainability, climate action, and the green economy. It functions as a public digital library that curates, organises, and explains research, policy, and practice for diverse audiences.

OLGE is not a consultancy producing proprietary reports.
It is not an advocacy organisation aligned to any political ideology.
It is not a media platform driven by opinion or commentary.

Our role is to act as a neutral bridge between research, policy, institutions, and the public, translating complex material into formats that can be understood and used without diluting scientific or policy rigour.

How OLGE works

OLGE operates through clearly defined methods of knowledge creation, curation, and dissemination.

First, we curate and organise existing knowledge. This includes public research, policy documents, institutional reports, and credible datasets related to sustainability and the green economy. Our focus is on synthesis and accessibility rather than duplication.

Second, we create explanatory and educational content. This includes plain-language explainers, policy briefs, case studies, thematic guides, and sectoral toolkits that translate complex material into usable knowledge for learners, practitioners, and decision-makers.

Third, we collaborate with experts and institutions. Scientists, researchers, practitioners, and organisations engage with OLGE through contributions, co-authored publications, interviews, webinars, and advisory roles. Institutions collaborate through research dissemination, capacity-building initiatives, and co-branded educational programs.

Fourth, we design digital knowledge infrastructure. Over time, OLGE will develop tools for visualisation, structured learning, and data exploration to support evidence-based understanding and decision-making.

Across all methods, OLGE follows the principles of openness, credibility, and contextual relevance. Content is openly accessible. Sources are clearly cited. Multiple perspectives are acknowledged where evidence or policy debates are evolving.

Rather than positioning individuals at the centre, OLGE is designed as an institution-first platform. Governance, partnerships, and content decisions are guided by the principles of independence, transparency, and long-term public value.

Who this library is for

OLGE is built for multiple audiences.

It is for students and learners seeking reliable entry points into sustainability and green economy topics.
It is for researchers and experts who want their work to reach wider audiences without losing accuracy.
It is for institutions, corporates, and public bodies looking to strengthen sustainability literacy and informed decision-making.
It is for citizens who want to understand how climate and economic transitions affect their lives and communities in depth, instead of with slogans.

By clearly defining these audiences, OLGE aims to support self-selection and meaningful engagement rather than broad, unfocused outreach.

How to engage with OLGE

Readers are welcome to use and share the resources freely.

Experts and practitioners may contribute content, insights, or participate in knowledge-sharing initiatives. Institutions may collaborate on research communication, education programs, or public awareness efforts. Supporters may engage through partnerships that strengthen the platform’s ability to remain open and independent.

All engagement pathways are designed to be transparent, mission-aligned, and respectful of the public-good nature of the library.

Where we are going

OLGE is a long-term institution in the making. Over the coming years, the platform aims to deepen its collections, expand multilingual access, strengthen institutional partnerships, and develop digital tools that improve how sustainability knowledge is discovered and understood.

Growth will be deliberate rather than rapid. Credibility, trust, and usefulness matter more than scale alone.

The transition toward more sustainable forms of development is as much a challenge of understanding, as it is a technical or financial challenge. Decisions tend to improve when the underlying knowledge is easier to access and interpret.

OLGE exists to contribute consistently to that foundation.

We invite you to read, question, use, and build upon this library in the spirit of shared responsibility and public good.
